Phishing is a term for criminals sending legitimate-looking emails that trick recipients into divulging their personal or financial information. Criminals often target real estate transactions with phishing attempts because of the large amounts of money being transferred electronically.

Buyers and sellers should exercise extra caution with emails about wiring money—always call a known phone number to verify any instructions—but phishing attempts that could compromise your email, bank account, or other sensitive information can take many forms.
